Print or screenshot these questions before your consultation. Go through each one systematically. A good surgeon will answer thoroughly; a red flag surgeon will be vague or defensive.
Most Medellín surgeons offer free virtual consultations via WhatsApp video. This is your chance to evaluate not just their qualifications, but how they communicate, how seriously they take your concerns, and whether they're being honest about risks and expectations.
Question Categories
Credentials & Experience
"Are you certified by SCCP (Colombian Society of Plastic Surgery)?"
This is non-negotiable. SCCP certification means they completed a proper plastic surgery residency. Verify independently at cirugiaplastica.org.co/buscar-cirujano/
"How many [specific procedure] have you performed?"
Experience matters. You want a surgeon who has done hundreds, not dozens, of your specific procedure. Ask for their annual volume.
"What is your complication rate for this procedure?"
Any surgeon who claims zero complications is either lying or hasn't done enough procedures. Look for transparency and realistic numbers.
"Can I see before-and-after photos of patients similar to me?"
You want to see results on patients with your body type, age, and goals. Generic portfolios don't show what YOUR results might look like.
Facility & Safety
"Where will surgery be performed? Is it JCI or ICONTEC accredited?"
Accreditation means the facility meets international safety standards. JCI is the gold standard. Avoid "garage clinics" at all costs.
"Do you have hospital privileges for emergencies?"
If something goes wrong, where will you be transferred? Surgeons operating in accredited facilities have hospital backup arrangements.
"Who administers anesthesia? Are they board-certified?"
Should be a board-certified anesthesiologist (S.C.A.R.E. member)—not a nurse anesthetist. This is a major safety factor.
Procedure Specifics
"What technique will you use and why?"
For BBL: Should specify subcutaneous-only fat injection. For breast surgery: What incision approach? A good surgeon explains their rationale clearly.
"What are the risks specific to my case?"
Every patient has unique risk factors. A thorough surgeon assesses YOUR situation, not just generic procedure risks.
"What results can I realistically expect?"
Beware of surgeons who promise dramatic transformations or "guarantee" results. Honest surgeons discuss both possibilities and limitations.
"How long will the procedure take?"
Elective procedures should stay under 6 hours. Longer surgeries increase complication risk. If combining procedures, make sure total time is reasonable.
Logistics & Aftercare
"What's included in your quote? What's NOT included?"
Get an itemized breakdown: surgeon fee, anesthesia, facility, implants, garments, follow-ups. Clarify what costs extra. No surprises.
"What is your revision policy if I'm unsatisfied?"
What happens if results aren't what you expected? Are touch-ups included? What's the timeframe? Get this in writing.
"What happens if I have complications after returning home?"
WhatsApp video calls should be standard for ongoing access. Ask about their protocol for remote follow-up and when you should seek local care.
"Am I a good candidate for this procedure?"
A good surgeon will tell you NO if you're not suitable. If they say yes to everyone without evaluating your case, that's a red flag.

Unwillingness to show credentials — Legitimate surgeons are proud of their qualifications
Promising "guaranteed" results — No surgery outcome can be guaranteed
"Menu" pricing without assessment — Your quote should be personalized to you
Rushing through consultation — Quality surgeons take time to evaluate
